British Bingo Banter I

It is believed that bingo calls were probably invented to fill the time it took to select a number from the glass cabinets containing the numbered ping-pong balls. These machines, used in the 1960’s when Bingo was introduced in UK, were very slow. Most of them were fitted with fans that made the balls dance joyfully in the cabinets; so doing the “bingo calls" also helped the players hear the numbers over the noise.

Traditional “Bingo Callers" use a nickname after they call a number. The nickname can be a whole sentence, one that people have learnt to associate with the number; mainly because it rhymes or because it describes in a funny way what the number looks like.

Lets’ look at 20, it has at least two nicknames. It is known as “one score”, since a score is twenty. It is also called as “getting plenty”, because it rhymes with twenty. Which you prefer varies of course with your personal taste. Most callers usually use a mixture of both. To be continued...
