Article of the week

British Bingo Banter II

Bingo numbers are traditionally called using a nickname in the UK. This practice saw the day in the 1960′s when Bingo was first introduced. These nicknames describe what the number looks like, rhyme with the number, or are associated to a specific cultural reference.

The following are some essential nicknames, easy to remember:

1. Kelly′s Eye; Bingo baby; at the beginning.
2. One little duck; me and you; Doctor Who.
3. I′m free; one little flea5; Debbie McGee.
4. Knock on the door; the one next door.
5. Man alive.
6. Chopsticks.
7. Lucky for some; lucky; one little crutch.
8. One fat lady; garden gate.
9. Doctor′s orders.

Some of those can be explained as follows:

Kelly′s Eye: After one-eyed Australian gangster Ned Kelly.
One little duck: The shape looks a bit like a swan.
One little flea: Looks a bit like a flea (looks like, mind).
One little crutch: Guess what? Looks like a crutch.
One fat lady: Resembling the two halves of a large lady.
Doctor's orders: In WW1, the British pill no. 9 was a laxative. To be ‘Number Nine’ was to be sick.

The above nicknames are usually called using the format: "On its own, nickname, number ‘x’ " Feel free to practice at home! To be continued...
