The arrival of new technologies, Random Number Generators (also known as RNGs) started to slowly displace bingo callers; with the new electronic machines the calls were not really needed. This might have been the end of a very amusing tradition but fortunately Bingo Callers are a breed that does not die easily!
Actually, the calls are getting a make-over thanks to popular culture influence. Calls like ‘Gareth Gates, number 8’ and ‘J.Lo’s bum, 71’ are renewing the repertoire. Classic calls such as ‘legs, 11’ and ‘Dirty Gertie, 30’ will remain whereas some older ones will be replaced by contemporary references.
Some new nicknames are already being used that reflect this trend: ‘Chicken Vindaloo’ instead of ‘Danny LaRue’ for number 52 or ‘Buckle my shoe’ is now ‘Jimmy Choo’ for number 32.
