Superstitions and Bingo - Part I
Bingo is a game of chance. It does not involve any particular skills or choice judgments (other than how much money you are going to spend!) But studies have shown that when outcomes are uncertain or unpredictable, many people appear to turn to superstition and / or luck in order to feel in "control" of the situation. This seems to be the case concerning some bingo players.
Now, you may not have any superstitions (or none that you care to admit), but believe it or not some people do! Let’s start with those we have found to be common in land-based bingo halls:
- If you drop your dauber: bad luck! Change it or you will not win a single game for the rest of the night!
- You must have a special seat and you have to sit on it every week. Changing seats is bad luck!
- Do bring your lucky charm with you! Family pictures, rabbit feet, cuddly toys, birth gems, horseshoes or four-leaf clovers are among the most popular.
- Don’t forget to wear your lucky clothes: shirt, pants, even socks or underwear!
- Make sure to ask the bingo caller to touch your tickets before the start of the game: that’s good luck!
- And of course do not forget to pick the cards with your lucky number(s) on them: 7, 13, etc.
