Good News For Bingo Companies in UK?
A research report, written by Investec Securities, claims that Gerry Sutcliff, the Minister for Sport, will be making a statement to Parliament «shortly.»
The news was enough to trigger a rise by 5.6 % in the shares of Rank Group Plc that trades on the London stock exchange.
As many other bingo companies in the United Kingdom, Rank has been having revenue issues, exacerbated by the smoking ban that went into effect last year. The VAT (Value Added Tax) along with the limit set on the number of high payout fruit machines (slot machines) has contributed largely as well to the bingo companies’ latest struggles.
Bingo companies have been petitioning to have the VAT removed for the past 5 years now. They consider it an unfair double taxation since bingo is the only form of gambling in the UK that is subject to that tax; hence their claims of being at a disadvantage with the other sectors of the gaming industry.
If the rumors are to be believed, the government might lower the restrictions on the fruit machines set last year. This could make the players go back to the land-based bingo halls, even if the online bingo industry is booming!
