Danish TV Station finds back door into gaming monopoly

TV2’s online skill-based games are the first challenge to the Danish national gaming authority’s monopoly.

State-owned TV2 found a loophole in the national gaming laws that allow it to provide cash payouts to winners of its online computer games.

Since TV2’ games can be classified as games of skill – based on skill as opposed to chance – they are not covered by the Danish national gaming laws. Danish courts have so far backed up the national gaming agency Danske Spil’s monopoly on an industry of 11 billion kroner and growing.

Lars Bernt, director of TV2 Net stated that they had «looked into the legalities together with gaming officials.» Clearly, they were able to differentiate between games of chance, covered by the monopoly and the games of skill which it seems are not.

Soon after learning of the loophole TV2 then created a website that offers 12 games like backgammon, golf and pool among others. Once a player creates an account and deposits money they can win, or lose.
