Luck and Superstitions in Bingo

The main attraction of online bingo is the potential to win heaps of money. That and it’s a fun game to play. While both these facets of the game make it a popular choice amongst the masses that are connecting to the virtual world daily, ask any player and surely the desire to win trumps all else. I mean, who doesn’t like to win?

The desire to win is second nature to all. To feel the euphoria of winning is coveted by all. Why else would many notable people –from philosophers to professors and politicians – have weighed in on ‘winning’ as a matter of course?

Confucius, China’s renowned philosopher and teacher, said of winning, “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.”  The Iron Lady even (for the uninitiated: Margaret Thatcher) once said, “The desire to win is born in most of us. The will to win is a matter of training. The manner of winning is a matter of honour.”

Online bingo is a game that is dictated by pure luck however. Constant practice is one facet of the game but that is only half the battle. Many players believe another is bringing luck onside, a practice that can take any form of superstition and ritual or prompt the carrying of lucky charms or talismans.

Superstitions in bingo give way to lucky socks or underwear or any article of clothing, for that matter, deemed lucky by its owner and to all manner of rituals imaginable. Heck, athletes are the biggest offenders; many of the most successful and famous are proprietors of some of the strangest rituals to ensure good luck.

Of course, coaxing ‘luck’ along is not for everyone. In fact, loads of people scoff at superstitious behaviours and lucky charms and would have it that none work. There is no tangible proof, universal truth about the effectiveness of these after all.

Whether they do actually work or not is neither here nor there. Fact is, superstition and rituals and lucky charms and talismans have been around for centuries, deeply entrenched in all cultures. What matters is what the player believes and as far as online bingo is concerned, if it makes his/her experience that much better, then why not.

I used to go to bingo halls, and people had all sorts of things in order to bring luck to them.  I always asked myself how a lady used an old coin to bring luck, if the guy on her right is using an old pair of socks to do the same.  However, now that I play online bingo and behind the curtains inside my house, I use a few things to bring luck on me, I have to be honest. =/

“The will to win is a matter of training”, if training means playing a lot of online bingo, then I’m in! :D
