Bingo Math

bingo math

Bingo players understand what the game is all about.  In the United States, bingo is a game that revolves around 5 x 5 cards pre-printed on matrices.  Players blot out numbers as those numbers are called.  In a traditional game of bingo, those numbers are 1 through 75.  Therefore, bingo players already have an idea that bingo is a game that relies heavily on math, but, because there are so many numbers, even and odd, involved, bingo players might feel a bit overwhelmed.  Fear not!  The math behind bingo is actually quite simple.

Probabilities and Odds

In a 75-ball game of bingo, the chances of a single number being drawn is 1 out of 75.  Every time a specific number is drawn, for instance the 6, the odds of that number coming up again on a ball go down.

Therefore, if a 6 is drawn with the very first ball and the odds of the number 6 coming up again is high in the overall game, it isn’t high in relation to all of the other 6’s.  If a 6 is drawn with the first ball, the odds of a 6 coming up again is now 6 out of 74 in the overall game.  The odds of a 6 coming up again in relation to all of the remaining 6’s is now 1 out of 6.  Only a 16, 26, 36, 46, 56 or 66 can be drawn in a 75-ball game of bingo because the 6 was drawn with the very first ball.

Odds and even numbers work almost the same.  In a 75-ball game of bingo, there are 38 odd numbers and 37 even numbers.  The odds of an even number being drawn are 1 out of 37.  If an even number is drawn first, then the odds of an even number being drawn second are 1 out of 36.  Every time an even number, or odd number for that matter, is drawn, the odds of an even or odd number being drawn again go down.

Using the Math to Your Advantage

By understanding the math, a bingo player can use it to his or her advantage.  How?  A player can increase his or her odds of winning by choosing bingo cards that showcase as many different numbers and as many different even and odd numbers as possible on cards.

A quick look at the number 6 example explains why variety is the key to winning at bingo.  The odds of a 6 coming up in relation to all other 6’s in a game of 75-ball bingo is 1 out of 6 if the 6 is drawn first, but the odds of a 6 coming up in a 75-game ball of bingo in relation to the game is 6 out of 74.

The odds are still high for the 6 to come up.  Get on the variety bandwagon and hit the B-I-N-G-O more often!
